About

Minecraft Builds Be Like refers to a series of image macro and caption memes in which a structure that resembles something you could build in Minecraft is shown next to the caption, "Minecraft builds be like." The format is based on a Reddit post made by Redditor u/Nashtheidiot to /r/Minecraftmemes in late August 2024 in which they posted a photo of a lifeguard station hanging over the beach from a nearby building, the shape and design of which arguably resembles a Minecraft structure. The post was deleted but gained viral spread over the following days, inspiring a meme trend on /r/Minecrafmemes and a dedicated /r/Minecraftbuildsbelike subreddit in protest of its deletion in which images of things shaped similarly to the lifeguard station are posted alongside the same caption.

Origin

On August 31st, 2024, Redditor u/Nashtheidiot posted a photo of a strangely built lifeguard station to the subreddit /r/Minecrafmemes,[1] titling it, "Minecraft builds be like:" and garnering over 55 upvotes before it was deleted by the moderators.

The lifeguard booth arguably looks like an in-game Minecraft construct due to the way it's built, consisting of a skinny stairway extending above and across the sidewalk with no support beams, followed by a larger booth at the end, bringing to mind Minecraft's build physics and the way blocks can seemingly float unsupported in the air with no consideration of weight or support.

Spread

On September 1st, 2024, X[2] user @MinecraftMeme16 reposted the meme, garnering over 2,900 likes in five days. On the same day, Redditor u/Pigeon_of_Doom_ reposted a screenshot of the deleted Reddit post to /r/Minecraftmmes,[3] writing, "The mods really don’t get it do they?" suggesting the mods deleted the original meme because they didn't get the joke, garnering over 18,500 upvotes in five days.

Memes referencing both the original meme and the deletion of the meme were popularized on /r/MinecraftMemes[4] over the following days as a way of trolling moderators and protesting the deletion.

On September 2nd, Redditor u/t60studios posted a version of the meme remade in Minecraft, garnering over 2,900 upvotes in four days.

On the same day, u/Z3R0Diro posted a flipped version of the original meme to /r/Minecraftmemes,[5] writing, "Minecraft builds in Australia be like," garnering over 4,000 upvotes in the same span of time.

On September 3rd, 2024, Redditor u/babimagic reposted another deleted version of the meme to /r/Minecraftmemes,[6] titling it almost identically to the first callout post, "The mods just don't get it do they?" garnering over 18,000 upvotes in three days.

On the same day, the /r/Minecraftbuildsbelike[7] subreddit was launched specifically for memes following the format. It garnered over 430 members in three days.

Later on September 3rd, Redditor u/MemeBoiCrep posted a version of the meme to /r/MinecraftMemes[8] remaking the building in the Roblox Experience Build a Boat for Treasure, garnering over 4,000 upvotes in three days.

On September 5th, 2024, Redditor u/Individual_Most_8190 posted a version of the meme to /r/MinecraftMemes[9] in which they've remade the shape in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, garnering over 1,500 upvotes in a day. On the same day, a post was made to /r/OutOfTheLoop[10] asking for context to the memes.
