About

A Few Millimeters of Bone is a catchphrase and image macro used within the involuntary celibacy (incel) community, indicating the slight genetic difference between Chads (sexual active males) and non-Chads (incels), specifically squared jaws and protruding brows. Often times, the phrase is accompanied by two pictures, a picture of an incel and a "morphed" picture of an incel as a Chad.

Origin

The earliest example of the "a few millimeters of bone" was posted on August 21st, 2016 by Twitter [1] @alexlayko. That day, he tweeted, "The difference between Chad and non-Chad (incel) is literally a few millimeters of bone." Under the phrase is a picture of a man juxtaposed by a picture of a similar looking man with an altered bone structure. The post (shown below) received more than 20 retweets and 40 likes in 14 months.

Spread

On October 30th, 2016, an anonymous 4chan [2] user posted a screenshot of the tweet in the /v/ and added the comment, "prove you're not casual." The post (shown below) received more than 70 comments.

About three weeks later, on November 18th, 2016, a since-deleted Reddit [3] account posted a thread entitled "Stop worshing Chads." In the post, the user shares the original tweet, and says, "The Difference Between Chad and Non-Chad is Literally a Few Millimeters of Bone, don't ruin your life and mental health because of such trival thing. Cheers."

As the meme attracted more attention, people outside the incel community began posting parodies of the meme. On October 4th, 2017, Tumblr [4] durbikins posted a picture of a man with several effect on his face and the catchphrase as a caption. The post (shown below, left) received more than 4,700 likes in three weeks.

Around this time, more Tumblr users began posting parodies, using characters like Shrek and Luigi (shown below, center and right, resepectively).

On October 26th, the Tumblr[5] user memedocumentation covered the emergence of the meme, as well as its various parodies.
