Miley Cyrus' "Mother's Daughter" is a song by American pop star Miley Cyrus released by RCA Records in 2019, as the lead single from Cyrus' second extended play She Is Coming.

Origin

On May 31st, 2019, Hot New Hip Hop^[4] said in an early review of the song that "the debut track on the EP, "Mother's Daughter," has Cyrus talking her sh*t and getting into her women empowerment bag. In her lyrics, Cyrus describes herself as "nasty and evil" and explains that she has the freedom to do as she wishes. " On June 11th, the song was official released. On July 2nd, Miley Cyrus released the official music video for "Mother's Daughter" (shown below). The video gained over 6.2 million views in a day and reached the number one spot on trending Youtube. ^[6]

On July 2nd, 2019, Miley Cyrus shared a series of portraits of women feature in the music video to Twitter. Some of the portraits spawn controversial comment threads. For example, Cyrus shared a photo of Angelina Duplisea featured in the video to which @SummerSalts^[1] replied by saying, "Do not let obesity hi-jack the body positivity movement" (shown below, left). Twitter user @AChodnickiTV^[2] shared a still of Little Miss Flint featured in the video (shown below, center). Many Twitter users shared @harrysamermaid's^[3] sentiment that with the video, "She’s out there supporting very body, every woman, every human right.
She’s fighting against those beauty standards" (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 1,000 likes and 500 retweets in a day. That same day, Fox News^[5] listed some of the negative comments found in response to the video such as, "I honestly preferred your 'Malibu' song and when you were simple, clean and focused on your musical talent. This whole act to get attention and shock value isn't impressing me."
