About
Microslop is a slang term and meme, a portmanteau of "Microsoft" and "slop," that was popularized online in early January 2026 as a way to mock Microsoft for its push toward AI in its products. The term itself has existed online for far longer, as early as 2005, but its widespread usage to poke fun at Microsoft's proclivity for AI did not emerge until the mid-2020s during the rise of artificial intelligence, particularly after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella complained in a blog post about the use of the slang "slop" for AI in late December 2025.
Origin
The earliest known existence of the slang term "Microslop" being used in a derogatory manner to refer to the tech giant Microsoft comes from a discussion thread on the Apple.com[1] forums, dated December 15th, 2005. In the reply, Apple user Allan Sampson referenced a Personal Folder File (PST) as a "proprietary Microslop format." However, it's plausible that this is not the first use of the term, which may no longer be archived online.
The term continued to see notable usage on various sites and forums over the following years, such as a 4chan[2] post from June 15th, 2011, which used Microslop in a discussion about Linux. Numerous other mentions of the term took place on 4chan[3] throughout the 2010s and 2020s.
On January 6th, 2025, an anonymous 4chan user notably used the slang in a Greentext Story meme about Minecraft creator Notch. The 4chan post was then shared to the /r/greentext[4] subreddit that same day, receiving over 17,000 upvotes and 575 comments in a year.
While Microslop was used throughout the 2000s, 2010s and earlier in the 2020s, the term primarily saw widespread adoption in late December 2025 and early January 2026 as a way to mock Microsoft for its AI push in the mid-2020s.
This popularization largely stemmed from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella publishing a blog post on his sn scratchpad[5] site on December 29th, 2025, which called for people to stop using the slang "slop" against AI, writing:
We need to get beyond the arguments of slop vs sophistication and develop a new equilibrium in terms of our “theory of the mind” that accounts for humans being equipped with these new cognitive amplifier tools as we relate to each other.
Word of Nadella's blog post quickly spread over the following days as social media users and various news outlets began reporting on it.
For instance, on January 2nd, 2026, X / Twitter[6] user Pirat_Nation tweeted about Nadella's blog post, receiving over 11.4 million views, 22,000 likes and 5,900 replies in five days. In the replies, several users posted Microslop memes and parody logos mocking the CEO.[7]
Spread
The slang term's usage to mock Microsoft's incorporation of AI tools and its CEO continued to rapidly spread in early January 2026, eventually trending on Twitter / X.[8]
On January 2nd, 2026, Twitter user MREVILA55 tweeted a meme and GIF of actor Robert Hays sweating from the movie Airplane, tagging Satya Nadella and poking fun at him, receiving over 5,300 views and 110 likes in five days.
As Microslop trended online, several media outlets began reporting on its rise in early January 2026, such as Windows Central[9] and TechCrunch.[10]
On January 3rd, YouTuber Moist Critikal (penguinz0) uploaded a video on the backlash toward Nadella, titled "He's Crying Over People Being Mean About AI," garnering over 1.4 million views, 75,000 likes and 7,600 comments in four days.
On January 5th, 2026, Redditor Risthel posted a Oh No, Anyway meme to the /r/memes[11] subreddit using the slang term, receiving over 3,000 upvotes and 50 comments in two days.
On January 6th, YouTuber Act Man TV uploaded a video covering Microslop, titled "The Unfortunate Rise of MicroSlop," accumulating over 241,000 views, 15,000 likes and 2,600 comments in roughly a day.
