Successful Mexican, also known as Sombrero Mexican, Merry Mexican and Juan, is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photo of a smiling man wearing a large sombrero with captions often including jokes about Mexican stereotypes, Spanish wordplay and Mexican accents.
Origin
On April 23rd, 2010, a Meme Generator[1] page titled "Successful Mexican" was launched, featuring a photograph of man wearing a sombrero hat in front of a green and red color wheel background (shown below).
Spread
On October 8th, 2011, Redditor mybonerthanksyou submitted an image macro with the caption "Upvotes para todos!" ("upvotes for all" in English) to the /r/pics[4] subreddit, where it gathered more than 770 points and 320 comments before it was archived (shown below).
On January 11th, 2012, an image macro making a joke about green cards was submitted to FunnyJunk[6] (shown below, left). On February 1st, a Successful Mexican image macro titled "How I feel as a Mexican on Reddit" was submitted to the /r/funny[3] subreddit, where it gained over 1,000 up votes and 530 comments prior to being archived (shown below, right).
In September, a Meme Generator[2] page titled "Sombrero Mexican" was created, featuring a similar template to the "Successful Mexican" page. On August 27th, 2013, Redditor Zerocool1996 posted an image macro joking about people confusing Mexicans for day laborers to the /r/AdviceAnimals[5] subreddit, where it garnered upwards of 2,100 points and 100 comments prior to being archived (shown below).
