Melania Trump Gardening refers to an image of First Lady Melania Trump working in the White House garden. The picture was taken in September of 2017, but surfaced on Twitter in late July of 2018, spawning jokes about how many users felt Trump looked unnatural in the garden.
Origin
On September 22nd, 2017, The White House posted a video of Melania Trump working with the Boys and Girls Club of America in the White House garden (shown below).
Spread
A still from the event began circulating on Twitter nearly a year later, in late July of 2018. On July 28th, 2018, user @bubbagump324 made a joke that Melania was "tending to her nightshade and hemlock garden," gaining over 730 retweets and 3,400 likes (shown below, left). On July 31st, Chrissy Teigen helped the image spread when she tweeted a comment on Melania's shoes in he image, gaining over 9,100 retweets and 121,000 likes (shown below, left).
After Teigen's tweet, many more Twitter users began making jokes about the image. One popular strand of jokes referenced the First Lady's 'I Really Don't Care' Jacket Gaffe. Twitter user @twitlarious made a photoshop edit of the picture with the words "I really don't garden, do you?" on the First Lady, gaining over 200 retweets and 1,600 likes (shown below, left). User @filmystic made a similar joke, gaining over 50 retweets and 400 likes (shown below, right).
The Twitter parodies were covered by several news outlets, including Daily Dot,[1] Huffington Post,[2] and Newsweek.[3]
