About

Me Watching vs. Me Recommending refers to an exploitable image macro meme featuring two women showing how people react when they're watching their favorite TV show, movie or anime and their reactions recommending the show to others. The meme was popularized on Twitter / X in early June 2024, usually describing pieces of media that affected the viewer in drastic ways but they still considered a good show and suggested others to see it.

Origin

On June 9th, 2024, X[1] user @nanaxfish posted a photoshopped image featuring a stressed-looking woman alongside the text "me watching" and the Banana Fish anime cover. Below, the same anime cover is paired with the text "me recommending" and a picture of a different woman doing a heart sign with her hands. The post (seen below) amassed more than 63,000 likes and 16,000 reposts in three days.

Spread

The "Me Watching vs. Me Recommending" meme quickly spread on X over the following days after X user @nanaxfish's post went viral in mid-June 2024, inspiring other fans to share what show, anime or movie makes them feel the same way as the women in the image.

For instance, on June 11th, 2024, X[2] user @flynnslick posted a version of the meme featuring the 2023 Past Lives movie poster (seen below, left), which garnered more than 13,000 likes and 2,900 reposts in a day.

On the same day, X[3] user @fleabagreact uploaded the meme featuring the Fleabag TV show poster (seen below, right), which received roughly 56,000 likes and 11,000 reposts in a day.
