Meaning

The phrase is often used as an expression of social awkwardness that is in tune with the theme of the /r/me_irl subreddit
On one /r/OutOfTheLoop post asking for the meaning behind the phrase, redditor /u/not_about_that_life explained:

It represents an awkward encounter like when you are having a conversation and someone asks you how are you but you thought they said that they were doing well so you respond with "me too thanks". Meirl made it a meme since they like awkward antisocial behavior and they'll upvote anything.[4]

Spread

On February 11th, 2015, Maddog2212 posted a thread on /r/OutOfTheLoop[2] asking why "me too thanks" was growing so popular. Another was submitted by silverben10[3] on July 8th, 2015. A third appeared on October 17th, 2016 by Emile666comics.[4] As the comments continued to appear, it grew into its own meme on the subreddit, as posts began to make jokes using variations of "me too thanks."
