Me Pretending That I Don't Care About X So Y refers to an exploitable meme template that recaptions a TikTok screenshot showing a girl looking at her fingernails and text reading Me Pretending That I Don't Care About The Movie So It Loads Faster. The original TikTok was posted by TikToker @itsmeeahnieeee in May 2021 and saw memetic usage as an image macro across Instagram, Twitter and elsewhere going into 2022 and 2023.

Origin

On May 11th, 2021, TikToker[1] @itsmeeahnieeee posted a video showing herself sitting down on a couch with her laptop on her lap and looking at her nails. The text read, "Me pretending that i dont care about the movie so it loads faster," and over the course of two years, the video received roughly 2.7 million plays and 586,200 likes (shown below).

On June 8th, 2021, Instagram[2] user @ppurebrainrot posted the first-known exploitation of the TikTok screenshot that referenced Lorde's then-recent album, earning over 50 likes in two years (shown below, left). On the next day, June 9th, 2021, Twitter[3] user @BADG3N1US tweeted an iteration about the Gossip Girl reboot, earning over 580 likes in two years (shown below, right).

Spread

After June 2021, the TikTok screenshot was exploited en masse across social media platforms. For instance, on November 30th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @himbo_anonymous posted an iteration about waiting for Pokémon to get captured, earning roughly 191,600 likes in one year (shown below, left). On December 1st, 2021, Twitter[5] user @angrybIack tweeted an iteration that read, "Me pretending that i dont care about the pasta so THE WATER BOILS," earning roughly 620,700 likes in one year (shown below, right). The meme was reposted to Instagram[6] on the same day.

Going into 2022 and 2023, the template saw further usage. For instance, on June 2nd, 2022, Instagram[7] user @mylifeisupsetting posted an iteration about waiting for a text message, earning roughly 11,300 likes in eight months (shown below, left). On February 17th, 2023, Twitter[8] user @mountbellyache tweeted an image about Grimes' ex dying (as in Elon Musk), earning roughly 1,100 likes in less than a day (shown below, right).
