About

Me Looking Into the Dimension Where X is a phrasal template associated with an exploitable GIF caption meme showing Miguel O'Hara (also known as Spider-Man 2099) looking into a different universe or dimension where he's seemingly happy, unlike his current universe. The GIF was surfaced from the 2023 film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and the format gained usage on Twitter, Reddit and iFunny, among other platforms, in June 2023.

Origin

On June 6th, 2023, Instagram[8] user @bleachiee posted a screen recording of their own tweet[9] that captioned a scene from the then-recent film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in which the character Miguel O'Hara is looking at a version of himself in an alternate reality. The caption read, "Me looking at the universe where the 2020 friend group never fell apart:" On Twitter,[9] it received over 30 likes in three weeks, while on Instagram,[8] it gained roughly 943,800 likes in three weeks (shown below). It is currently the first discovered use of the meme format.

Spread

The aforementioned video was soon reposted to iFunny.[10] Then, on June 14th, 2023, iFunnier[11] @jerryboiz posted a variant of the meme, gaining roughly 12,900 smiles in 13 days (shown below, left). The meme then trended again on Twitter, predominantly starting on June 18th, 2023, when Twitter[1] user @TrentAUS_ tweeted a GIF caption that used the scene. @TrentAUS_ captioned the GIF, "me looking into the dimension where i never played splatoon," and over the course of eight days, the meme received roughly 12,200 likes (shown below, right).

Soon after Twitter[1] user @TrentAUS_'s post in mid-June 2023, others on the platform started to post variations of the GIF caption template, recaptioning it to reference other subcultures and concepts. For instance, the first-known variant was posted by Twitter[2] user @ATHOTH_AGOGO on June 18th, 2023, replacing Splatoon with Sonic the Hedgehog, gaining roughly 15,900 likes in eight days (shown below, left). On June 19th, Twitter[3] user @fishfibre tweeted, "me looking into the dimension where I don’t have a tummy ache," gaining roughly 120,000 likes in one week (shown below, right).

The format started to spread across social media. For instance, on June 19th, 2023, Redditor SgtGhost57 posted a War Thunder version to /r/warthundermemes,[4] gaining over 900 upvotes in one week (shown below, left). On June 20th, iFunnier[5] @INcellbuttransphobic posted a version about Destiny, gaining roughly 12,400 smiles in six days (shown below, right).

Viral iterations persisted on Twitter[6] and iFunny[7] in late June 2023.
