About
Me Leaving X With Y Up My Ass is a phrasal snowclone used as a caption for footage of people walking or standing in an awkward manner, most notably a clip of Spencer characte Princess Diana stumbling down a hall and a photograph of the playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda. The memes often mention speculated or canceled sequels of various franchises.
Origin
Memes in which videos of people moving awkwardly were captioned with jokes about carrying something in their rectum have gone viral online since January 2021, with the joke originally centered around hiding Uno cards. On January 14th, 2021, Twitter[1] user @BhadDhad posted a clip of Kim Kardashian walking in a tense manner, captioning it, "me leaving the room after screaming UNO! with 4 cards up my ass." The tweet (shown below) gained over 130 retweets and 1,000 likes.
On March 3rd, 2022, several k-pop stan accounts posted similar memes based on photographs of K-pop idols having a tense pose while sitting captioned with the joke. For example, tweets[2][3][4] by users @fairyIightnct, @oshthinker and @shineepril (the author of the Kim Kardashian tweet) gained over 710 retweets, 970 retweets and 1,300 retweets in five months, respectively (shown below).
Spread
The format did not achieve viral status until November 2021. On November 10th, 2021, Twitter[5] account @thecartooncrave made a post about the Encanto songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, attaching a photograph in which Miranda clenches his legs as if needing to urinate. On November 11th, Twitter[6] user @faerievhs captioned the photograph, "me leaving the store with the newest iphone up my ass," with the post gaining over 8,500 retweets and 92,200 likes in nine months (shown below, left).
In the following days, the image caption trend achieved viral popularity on Twitter. For example, on November 12th, Twitter[7] user @CloudyMoth posted a version about Half-Life 3, an anticipated but never announced installment in the Half-Life series, that received over 420 retweets and 4,200 likes in nine months (shown below, center).
On November 25th, 2021, Twitter[8] user @ladybturd posted a clip from the 2021 film Spencer in which Princess Diana Spencer, portrayed by Kristen Stewart, is walking down a hall, stumbling, captioning the clip, "me 5 mins after eating a plate of mac and cheese." The tweet gained over 250 retweets and 2,500 likes in nine months. On November 26th, 2021, Twitter[9] user @ISISSTOP made another upload of the clip.
On November 26th, Twitter[10] user @joannesbitch posted the first Me Leaving X With Y Up My Ass video caption meme using the clip that received over 550 retweets and 4,600 likes in nine months (shown below).
In late 2021 and early 2022, the clip, as well as the photograph of Lin-Manuel Miranda,, saw occasional use as source material for more Leaving X With Y Up My Ass memes.[11][12]
On August 2nd, 2022, Twitter[13] user @edgewalker81 posted a video caption meme referencing the Batgirl Cancellation Controversy that gained over 16,400 retweets and 199,000 likes in two weeks (shown below).
