On October 17th, 2017, the Texas Basketball Twitter [1] posted several pictures of actor Matthew McConaughey talking to the University of Texas basketball team, including one of him with his hands on his hips. They captioned the post (shown below) "Appreciate @McConaughey speaking before today's practice & dropping knowledge. #TexasFamily @UTAustin @TexasExes." Within two days, the post received more than 160 retweets and 720 likes.

That day, Twitter[2] users began sharing the photos on the site. ESPN producer commentator @chrisjfarrow posted a photograph from another ESPN Producer, Brett WIlensky, of McConaughey with his hands on hips speaking at a University of Texas basketball team practice. He captioned the tweet, "One of our producers was at Texas men's hoop practice today. Look who he saw…… @McConaughey w/ Shaka and the team." The post (shown below, left) received more than 135 retweets and 1,346 likes in two days.

Twitter user @malcham94 tweeted the photos, as well, with the caption "idk what McConaughey was saying but it must’ve been fierce af." The post (shown below, right) received more than 44,000 retweets and 146,000 likes in two days.



After the picture went viral, people began captioning the photo with different specifics about McConaughey's persona and previous acting roles. The following day, Twitter[4] user @emilynicole92 tweeted the photo with the caption "Listen up boys… ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT." Within 24 hours, the tweet (shown below) received more than 600 retweets and 2,400 likes.

That day, Twitter[5] published a Moments page, archiving the popularity of the picture and the emergence of the meme.



The next few days, the picture made it into entertainment media, with the primary headline being about how the sassy pic has now become a meme including InStyle,[6] Chron,[7] and Maxim.[8] The sassy tweet even got coverage in local news KVUE[9] and also in Golf Digest.[10]
