Markiplier's "You're So Portuguese" refers to a viral clip from American streamer and content creator Markiplier in which he spots a kitty during gameplay and says the line "kitty what are you doing out here! Did I not see you before? You're so Portuguese." The phrase became a prominent sound and catchphrase in early November 2023 on TikTok, typically used by pet owners to show their cats and also for the Hello Everybody My Name Is Markiplier meme.

Origin

On August 11th, 2023, TikTok^[1] user @be10andwithered uploaded a clip showing streamer Markiplier playing the indie horror game Sinking Iron. In a particular moment of the gameplay, the streamer spots a kitty and starts talking to the pet, saying, "Kitty what are you doing out here! Did I not see you before? You're so Portuguese."

The last phrase is a reference to Lixian, Markiplier's producer since 2018, who is a native of Portugal and is also one of the developers of Sinking Iron and the Iron Lung horror games. The post (shown below) amassed over 1.3 million plays and 395,000 likes in three months.

Markiplier's kitty clip inspired cat owners to share videos on TikTok of their pets using the streamer's voice. For instance, on November 10th, 2023, TikTok^[2] user @awleli uploaded a video of their kitty using the viral Markiplier sound (shown below, left), which garnered over 2.4 million plays and 846,000 likes in a week. On November 16th, 2023, TikTok^[3] user @hoventhehypnotist posted a video (shown below, right) about his obsession with the viral sound, receiving more than 562,000 plays and 187,000 likes in a day.

TikTok user @moon_moondrop1^[4] posted on September 14th, 2023, an animated version of the streamer's viral sound (shown below). amassing roughly 54,000 plays and 12,000 likes in three months.
