About
Mario Kart Racing Edits is a genre of parodies and memes in which videos of celebrities or regular people are edited to either be inside of a Mario Kart race or have Mario Kart UI photoshopped on top of a real-world situation, also commonly including sounds and music from the video games. The video-editing trend began to spike in virality in late 2019, continuing into the following years, primarily on YouTube.
Origin
One of the earliest examples of this type of meme was posted to Twitter by the page and meme creator @Fluor3sc3nt[1] on July 20th, 2019, using footage of the Twitch streamer Tyler1 to simulate getting a star powerup in 3rd place and using it to win the race in the last few seconds, earning over 1.6 million views and 71,000 likes in three years (shown below).
Spread
On September 29th, 2019, two months later, another Mario Kart racing edit was created by the account @HearingAidsEdit[2] in which Alex Jones is shown being devastated at Coconut Mall by getting knocked from 1st to 12th place due to a Blue Shell, causing him to rage quit, earning over 4.1 million views and 50,000 likes in three years (shown below).
On August 29th, 2022, the YouTuber Chiptuner[3] uploaded a video to their YouTube channel of Walter White being in a Mario Kart race on Rainbow Road against Jesse Pinkman, earning over 3 million views in four months (shown below).
