Mandi Lumpur (Eng. Mud Bath) refers to videos, mostly livestreamed, of someone bathing in a pool of mud with the hopes that people who watch the stream will give them money, with the person in the mud pool claiming they will do anything in the pool in return. The trend gained popularity in Indonesia as people used it to beg.

Origin

The first video and who exactly started this trend is unknown because most videos are livestreamed. The earliest uploaded TikTok recognizing the trend is on May 24th, 2022 by TikTok^[1] user @sultantiktok.71. The video shows the user giving TikTok "gifts" to another TikTok user who is doing a mud bath livestream. The video received more than 557,000 views in eight months (shown below).

Spread

Starting in 2022, the trend gained popularity in Indonesia, with people using it as beg material under the guise of entertainment. For example, on July 31st, 2022, TikTok^[2] user @anjay_mulungcoin7 uploaded a video by deleted TikTok account @seleb_planet_mars1, in which the account's owner was preparing to do a mud bath and claiming he was doing it to entertain people. The video received more than 948,000 views in six months (shown below, left). On October 15th, 2022, TikTok^[3] user @worm_eating_man0 uploaded a video with same purpose from deleted TikTok account @ceo_skincare_coklat1. The video received more than 1.5 million views in three months (shown below, right).

Meanwhile, most Indonesians didn't like the trend, with many complaining about it and making fun of it. For example, on June 9th, 2022, TikTok^[4] user @raden_rendi_putra uploaded a stitch video about his reaction, using video of himself operating an excavator. The video received more than 469,000 views in seven months (shown below, left). On January 13th, 2023, TikTok^[5] user @mesyana11 uploaded a video warning people to not giving money or "gifts" to those who were doing mud baths. The video received more than 982,000 views in six days (shown below, right).

Cokinstore's Mud Bath

On December 22nd, 2022, YouTube^[6] user ScareTheater uploaded a video that explained the mystery behind the TikTok account @cokinstore, who suddenly livestreamed someone bathing in the mud while hyperventilating and looking deeply distressed. The video received more than 405,000 views in three weeks (shown below, left). On January 8th, 2023, YouTube^[7] user Lazy Masquerade uploaded a compilation of disturbing things, and one of them is @cokinstore's mud bath. The video received more than 584,000 views in one week (shown below, right, skip to 2:07).

@Intan_Komalasari92 Parents Mud Bath

On January 13th, 2023, TikTok^[8] user @jhon.lbf_official uploaded a video addressed to @Intan_Komalasari92 and asked them to stop making their parents do the mud bath, even offering a job to them. The video received more than 3.5 million views in one week (shown below, left). On January 17th, 2023, TikTok^[9] user @Intan_Komalasari92 responded to the offer through a stitch, saying "they will stop making mud bath content if Jhon transfers them money, IDR 200 million" (approx USD 13,000). The video received more than 854,000 views in three days (shown below, right).

As a result of this, according to local media Kompas^[10], the Indonesian Minister of Social Affairs, Tri Rismaharini, released a government notice on January 19th, 2023, banning any online beggars.
