Man Shaking While Drinking Water refers to a viral video of Saudi influencer Abu Hamdan shaking uncontrollably while drinking water and spilling it as he attempts to remain calm. It is often used in image macros and as a reaction or exploitable to comedically portray fear or nervousness.

Origin

On June 14th, 2018, Saudi Instagram[2] influencer @warchieff, whose real name is Abu Hamdan, uploaded a video of himself taken at the FIFA World Cup holding a bottle of water while shaking violently, assumedly due to fear or nerves, and then taking a drink as if trying to hide his nervousness. The video's caption roughly translates to, "When you're called for the team," and gained over 3.7 million views in roughly three years (shown below).

On February 16th, 2019, Portuguese Twitter[1] user @shaidersolutt made a tweet that roughly translates to, "Me: Finally I'm going to meet @, I'm prepared but I'm not going to be nervous. @: I'm close Me:" followed by the video of Hamdan (shown below). The tweet gained over 933,000 views, 32,000 likes and 15,000 retweets in two years.

On February 25th, YouTuber[5] Trendy reuploaded the video, titled "Man shaking while drinking water meme," garnering over 166,000 views in two years.

Spread

The video spread across Twitter[3][4] over the course of 2019, often used as a reaction to various posts to portray nervousness, excitement or fear. The video also became popular in image macros, particularly on iFunny.

On March 27th, 2019, iFunny[6] user AspenSavage uploaded an image macro referencing the Nintendo DS featuring a GIF of Hamdan drinking water, garnering over 72,000 smiles in just under two years (shown below, left). On July 12th, iFunny[7] user TheLegend20plus7_2013 uploaded an image macro referencing the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion using the GIF, garnering over 83,000 smiles in a comparable span of time. The video was re-uploaded to /r/Animemes[8] on July 26th, garnering an additional 2,200 upvotes (shown below, right).

On November 9th, 2020, Twitter[11] user NFL Memes uploaded the GIF under a tweet reading, "Trevor Lawrence watching the Jets drop to 0-9…" garnering over 27,000 likes and 2,700 retweets in a year. On February 11th, 2021, Redditor /u/harsshvvardhan posted an image macro to /r/dankmemes[9] featuring the GIF, garnering over 17,400 upvotes in two weeks (shown below).

On February 19th, YouTuber[10] memes by cowbelly uploaded a video featuring the clip edited over footage from the video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time garnering over 38,300 views in four days (shown below).
