"Mambo No. 5" Stomach Dance is a TikTok trend featuring participants with smiley faces drawn on their stomachs, a jacket or shirt worn around their waist and trash bags or other coverings on their head and upper torso dancing to the Lou Bega song "Mambo No. 5".

Origin

On September 18th, 2020, TikToker @angelavanmaanen shared the earliest known version of the trend. The post received more than 38,000 reactions, 4,400 shares and 600 comments in less than one year (shown below).


Spread

Over the next few months, the dance trend continued to spread on TikTok. On November 22nd, 2020, TikToker @karendeweerdt shared a variation in which three people appear dancing with smiley faces drawn on their stomachs. The post received more than 1 million views, 102,000 reactions and 1,700 comments in less than three months (shown below, left).

The following year, the trend spread even farther on TikTok. On January 12th, 2021, TikToker @royaleereyes shared a variation that received more than 11 million views, 2.3 million reactions and 52,000 comments in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
