About
#MakeSolo2Happen, also known as Make Solo 2 Happen, refers to a social media campaign to convince Disney of interest in a sequel to the 2018 science fiction film Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Origin
On September 14th, 2018, Solo-writer Jon Kasdan tweeted[1] a series of thoughts and observations on the film, which had been released in theaters May 10th of that year. In the final post, he said of the possibility of a sequel, "To be honest, I think the challenge has much more to do with the foreign box office than the U.S.. Personally, I think there are great Star Wars movies to be made that don’t need to cost quite so much. Hopefully that will be the trend in the years to come, and maybe, just maybe, that trend will allow us, one way or another, to tell more stories with Alden, Joonas, Emila and Donald." The tweet received more than 150 retweets and 1,600 likes in eight months (shown below, left).
Two days later, Star Wars podcaster James Baney responded to a tweet about a Solo sequel "#MakeSolo2Happen" in less than one year (shown below, right).[2]
Spread
The following day, the Twitter[3] account for Baney's podcast "The Resistance Podcast" advertised "Make Solo 2 Happen" merchandise. The post received more than 50 retweets and 200 likes in less than one year (shown below).
As the movement grew in popularity, the podcast announced that on May 23rd, they would be celebrating "#MakeSolo2Happen Day," during which they would hope to make their hashtag a worldwide trending topic (shown below, left).[4]
On May 23rd, 2019, the fan account @MakeSolo2Happen tweeted,[5] "Today’s the day! We’re putting together a crew. You in? Let’s #MakeSolo2Happen." The tweet received more than 1,400 retweets and 4,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below, center).
Throughout the day, others shared their thoughts on Solo and their desire for a sequel (example below, right).
Additionally, the makers of Solo also weighed in on the hashtag. Jon Kasdan tweeted,[6] "Beyond grateful & galvanized by the #MakeSolo2Happen energy on Twitter today. Means so much to everyone involved & ur enthusiasm makes it possible for us to keep advocating for it! 'Cause, the Maker knows, there's a WAR story set in a Galaxy Far Far Away that's yet to be told." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 525 retweets and 2,100 likes (shown below, left).
Solo-director Ron Howard commented on a #MakeSolo2Happen tweet[7] with a smiley face emoticon. The tweet received more than 775 retweets and 5,100 likes in 24 hours (shown below, right).
