Make Vatican Great Again or MVGA refers to a catchphrase and series of memes inspired by the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) slogan adopted by the United States President Donald Trump and his supporters after the American cardinal Robert Prevost, Pope Leo XIV, was elected 267th pope of the Catholic church in early May 2025. Jokes linking MAGA to the American pope gained traction on Twitter / X, Reddit and Facebook in the following days.
Origin
The "Make Vatican Great Again" catchphrase gained viral usage on May 3rd, 2025, after U.S. President Donald Trump posted the AI-generated image of himself as the pope, known online as Trump Pope.
That same day, X[1] user @TomasVilimec uploaded the Trump Pope meme using the catchphrase, "Make Vatican Great Again," as the caption for the image, amassing roughly 4,000 views and 120 likes in a week.
Spread
On May 8th, 2025, the catchphrase was shared widely across Twitter / X, Reddit and Facebook after the American cardinal Robert Prevost was selected and became Pope Leo XIV of the Catholic church.
For example, on May 8th, 2025, X[2] user @rmotta2 posted a picture of Pope Leo the 14th, captioning it, "Make Vatican Great Again." The tweet (seen below) received over 71,000 views and 4,600 likes in a day.
On the same day, X[3] user @WujaJurek posted a similar post (seen below), which received more than 21,000 views and 300 likes in a day.
