About

Mackle Less is a common pun on the name Macklemore in which people express their distaste for the rapper by saying a variation of "I wish he'd mackle less." After becoming popular with regards to Macklemore, the joke spread to include other people with the last name Moore.

Origin

The earliest known use of the pun appeared on Twitter on October 10th, 2012[1] when user @CliffClinton[1] wrote "Don't get me wrong, I like the new Macklemore album just fine. I'm just scared his career goes down hill, when critics demand "Mackle-Less"" (shown below).

Spread

Over the following years, the joke would be repeated in various iterations. Some popular examples include an August 29th, 2013 tweet by comedian Jordan Peele[2] that gained over 730 retweets and 660 likes (shown below, left) and an October 14th, 2017 tweet by user @taikaawaititi[3] that gained over 130 retweets (shown below, right).

The pun has also been popularly adopted by news organizations in their coverage of Macklemore. For example, all Jezebel articles about the rapper are under the tag "I wish he'd Mackle less."[4] A Buzzfeed[5] piece about the rapper's song "White Privilege II" is similarly filed under "mackleless." Around the same time, pop culture blog Splice Today[6] posted a blog with the title "He Should Mackle Less."

Other Names

As the pun on Macklemore's name spread, the joke has grown to include other people with "more" in their name. For example, following the Roy Moore Sexual Misconduct Allegations, many Twitter users joked that he should "Roy Less." For example, user @simonmaloy[7] made the joke and gained 20 retweets and 130 likes in one day (shown below, left). Twitter user @mattytalks[8] made a similar joke and his tweet had similar spread (shown below, right).

Other names used include Mandy Moore[9] and Demi Moore.[10]
