Origin

On October 18th, 2017, the CIA Twitter account tweeted updates[1] on Lulu, a dog who after undergoing training to be an explosive detecting dog, was discharged from duty after it was determined she was uninterested in doing the job. Further explanation was offered on the CIA Blog.[10]


Spread

The account tweeted several more pictures of the dog, explaining her story, including that she was adopted by her handler. The story went viral on Twitter, as several users jokingly related to Lulu (examples shown below).


Meanwhile, popular Twitter user @darth[2] tweeted several photoshops of Lulu looking at the camera, as though expressing disappointment (examples shown below).

The story was covered by many major news outlets, including Washington Post,[3] Select All,[4] The New York Times,[5] Gizmodo,[13] People Magazine,[6] and more. The story even made it into international news such as the BBC[7] and DailyMail[11] in the United Kingdom, Global News[8] in Canada and Deutsche Welle[12] in Germany.
