About

Luigi Dab refers to a dab dance move performed by the character Luigi in the 2017 turn-based tactical game Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

Origin

On August 28th, 2017, the Ubisoft US YouTube channel released a trailer for the game Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, in which the character Luigi is shown performing a dab dance move (shown below). Within 72 hours, the trailer gathered upwards of 53,400 views and 350 comments.

Precursor

On June 6th, 2016, YouTuber Niacnaes uploaded a clip of Luigi performing a dab move during a Super Smash Bros. match with the 2015 hip-hop song "Trap Queen" by Fetty Wap playing in the background (shown below).

Spread

That day, Twitter user @LuigiOdyssey tweeted a video clip Luigi performing a dab move in the trailer (shown below). Within 72 hours, the tweet gained over 43,000 likes and 20,000 retweets. Meanwhile, the video game news blog EuroGamer^[1] confirmed that the dab was in the game, reporting that the move could be executed by launching a sentry "while not using cover."

Also on August 29th, an animated GIF of Luigi dabbing in the trailer was submitted to /r/NintendoSwitch,^[3] where it accumulated upwards of 12,900 points (86% upvoted) and 890 comments within three days (shown below). On August 31st, a screen cap of Luigi dabbing reached the front page of /r/SubredditSimulator,^[2] along with the computer-generated title "TFW you are a Nazi but the understanding is they would to get a round of golf in." That day, the @NintendoNYC^[4] Twitter feed posted a photograph of Luigi dabbing at a Mario + Rabbids launch event (shown below, right).
