It became a talking point on the microblogging site after the message was sent to a large number of Tumblr users.

Origin

The first Tumblr posts referencing the spam appeared on July 22nd, 2011. The spam took the form of an anonymous Tumblr question, so only users with this feature enabled on their Tumblr accounts received the spam.

Spread

A single topic blog devoted to lolsummer69^[2] was started on July 23rd, 2011. The site UpRoxx^[3] posted an article titled "Meme Watch: LOLSummer69 Thinks Tumblr Has Always Wanted To See Them Naked" on July 25th, 2011.

The Tumblr post "Reblog this if ‘lolsummer69’ wants you to see them naked"^[1], originally posted by Tumblr user P3n1s, has amassed over 45,000 notes as of July 25th, 2011. The spam has inspired image macro derivatives which can be found under the Tumblr^[4] tag #lolsummer69. A Facebook^[5] fan page has accumulated 3,326 likes as of July 25th, 2011.
