Lo Suponía or Lo suponíamos refers to a catchphrase of the Dragon Ball anime character Goku with the Spanish text "Lo Suponía," which translates to "I thought so" and a rainbow overlay to indicate a homosexual connotation. The term went viral in 2022, inspiring memes and variations with other anime characters.

Origin

On February 15th, 2022, the Facebook^[1] meme page Lordxitachi9 first used the meme to express a dad's reaction to seeing his kid eating a banana. The image shows the main character Goku with the Spanish text "Lo Suponía," which translates to "I guessed it" in English, to indicate a suspicion about homosexual activities. The post garnered 171,000 likes and 46,000 shares in a year (see below).

Spread

Over the course of 2022, the meme was spread to other social media sites, inspiring a new version of the image with an LGBTQ+ rainbow flag filter over the original meme. One of the first examples found was uploaded on Pinterest^[2] by @Sunk_010 on April 26th, 2022 (see below).

The catchphrase also became a trending topic on TikTok^[3] in October 2022, with thousands of memes showing video edits of Dragon Ball characters with an LGBTQ+ rainbow flag filter. For instance, on October 18th, TikTok^[4] user @sb.dbs posted a video with the anime characters, the phrase "Lo Suponía" and the rainbow flag with a question mark beside it. The video (below, left) garnered 37,100 plays and 2,100 likes in six months. A similar edit video (below, right) was posted by TikTok^[5] user @vnxmyt on October 5th, 2022, receiving 453,800 plays and 66,700 in six months.
