"Boys" is a song by American musician, songwriter and recording artist Lizzo. Shortly after its release, the song became a popular subject on the lipsyncing social media application TikTok and an image macro series on Twitter.
Origin
On June 22nd, 2018, Lizzo released the song "Boys" as a digital addition to her album Cuz I Love You.[1] That day, a video for the song was uploaded to Lizzo's YouTube channel.
Spread
All The Boys
Shortly after the song's release, the song became a popular sound on TikTok.
On May 23rd, 2019, TikTok user @kevboyperry uploaded one of the first All the Boys videos (shown below). The video has gained over 442,600 likes and 12,500 shares in two weeks.
Days later, on May 25th, 2019, @TootyMcNooty uploaded an animation using the song (shown below, left). The video gained over 885,600 likes and 49,400 shares in two weeks. The next day, @nickaufman uploaded a typical rendition of the series where he himself acts out all the different boys listed in the video (shown below, center). On May 27th, @?.? uploaded an edited video featuring popular cartoon characters representing all the boy types of boys listed in the lyrics (shown below, right). The video gained over 16,600 likes and 500 shares in a week.
Lizzo's Boys As
On June 22nd, 2019, Twitter [2] @adri_mdc tweeted, "Lizzo’s “BOYS” as *Good Boys* a thread." The post received more than 1,600 likes and 700 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below, left). Over the next few posts, @adri_mdc posted the lyrics and images of dogs that resemble the description in the song's lyrics (shown below, right).[3]
Two days later, Twitter[4] user @price_zach tweeted, "Lizzo’s “Boys” as lizards, a thread." The post received more than 77,000 likes and 28,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).
Over the next week, other people continued to make joke threads comparing the Lizzo song to various other image subjects (shown below, center and right).
On June 27th, the website PopBuzz[5] published a report on the memes.
