About

Little Miss Memes, also known as Little Miss Parodies or Mr. Men Parodies, refers to the editing and recaptioning of the covers of Mr. Men and Little Miss children's books. The trend of using Little Miss characters as exploitables started on Tumblr in 2021 and spread to Instagram in early 2022. It received more engagement on TikTok in mid-2022 when female creators shared edited Little Misses and labeled themselves to each one based on their personalities, typically set to the song "Cash In Cash Out" by Pharrell Williams.

Origin

The Mr. Men book series was first published in 1971 by British author Roger Hargreaves.^[1] The accompanying series titled Little Miss began publication in 1981.^[1] As of 2022, there are a total of 92 Mr. Men and Little Miss characters, each having their own book. The series was carried on by Roger Hargreaves' son, Adam Hargreaves, after his death in 1988.

On June 17th, 2021, the Tumblr^[2] blog notyourgaybestie posted a Little Miss parody that portrayed "Little Miss Smokes Too Much Weed." Over the course of 13 months, the meme received over 720 notes (shown below).

Almost a year later, on April 17th, 2022, Twitter ^[3] user dreamgirltat reposted the Little Miss Smokes Too Much Weed image, earning roughly 36,200 likes in three months.

The aforementioned tweet inspired Instagram^[4] user juulpuppy to upload a carousel post on April 19th, 2022, that included nine parody Little Misses, earning roughly 39,000 likes in three months. The post featured "Little Miss Borderline Personality Disorder," "Little Miss Queerbaiter," "Little Miss Neurodivergent Stripper," "Little Miss Homophobic ?Bisexual?," "Little Miss Irritable Bowel Syndrome," "Little Miss Girlblogger," "Little Miss Shien Haul," "Little Miss Fearful Avoidant" and "Little Miss Ran" Through (shown below).

On April 20th, 2022, Instagram^[5] user juulpuppy uploaded another carousel post with more Little Miss memes they created, earning roughly 28,600 likes in three months. The next day, April 21st, 2022, Instagram^[6] user juulpuppy posted another carousel post that earned roughly 15,600 likes in three months. This time, they included many Mr. Men parodies such as "Mr. Receding Hairline," "Mr. Smokes Mid," "Mr. Letterboxd," "Mr. Archive Designer Menswear," "Mr. Gross Feet," "Mr. Ran Thru," "Mr. Modular Synth," "Mr. Whiskey Dick," "Mr. Mommy Issues" and "Mr. Untoned Bleach Hair" (shown below).

Spread to TikTok

Starting in late June 2022, TikToker^[7] starbucksslayqueen (private) posted multiple Little Miss memes. Starbucksslayqueen utilized TikTok's "Photos" feature that showed slideshows. Despite several reposts of juulpuppy's memes, many of the images were also starbucksslayqueen's own exploited versions.

TikToker starbucksslayqueen went private in mid-July 2022 due to backlash levied against them by juulpuppy and their fans. On July 11th, 2022, Instagram user juulpuppy made multiple posts to their Story about how starbucksslayqueen had stolen their format/memes without giving credit (shown below).

Aside from TikToker starbucksslayqueen going private, many TikTokers proceeded to create Little Miss videos going into the remainder of July 2022. For instance, on July 9th, TikToker^[8] putketchupongrilledchee posted a "My friends as Little Misses" video that received roughly 52,700 plays and 3,200 likes in two days (shown below, left). On July 8th, TikToker^[9] parithepl4typus posted a video that joked about the Little Misses trend being mean due to light bullying, earning roughly 80,300 plays and 16,700 likes in three days (shown below, right).
