About

Little Asian Girl Dancing refers to a series of exploitable green screen and CapCut memes using clips of a young Chinese girl dancing eccentrically. The videos are sourced from TikToker @kmkimii throughout 2023 and were first popularized as a green screen template in June of that year among Spanish-speaking TikTokers, spreading to English-speaking TikTokers later in the year. The memes insert the dancing girl into new scenarios alongside captions that express excitement over something.

Origin

On March 9th, 2023, TikToker[1] @kmkimii started posting videos of her daughter dancing eccentrically to a variety of songs. Some of the most popular examples were uploaded to TikTok[2][3] on March 11th, garnering over 125,000 views in five months (shown below, left) and May 22nd, garnering over 10 million views in three months (shown below, right). Prior to this, throughout 2022, the user uploaded videos of the girl dancing to the TikTok[11] account @lovequan000.

Green screens and CapCut[4] templates of the girl dancing, largely from the two most popular videos but not exclusively, became popularized as exploitable memes by Spanish-speaking TikTokers in June 2023, although it is unknown who started the meme. One of the earliest known examples was posted by TikToker[5] @anmorenogon on June 4th, 2023, placing the girl in a gym setting captioned, "when my boyfriend tells me that after the gym we can go for some hamburgers and do cardio at home," garnering over 2.1 million views in two months (shown below).

Spread

The meme continued to spread amongst Spanish-speaking TikTokers over the following weeks, largely under the same original sound. On June 7th, 2023, TikToker[6] @franciscocustodi83 posted a version of the meme using the girl to represent their mood when the workday ends, garnering over 5.8 million views in two months (shown below, left). On June 10th, TikToker[7] @soygabo10 posted a version of the meme captioned, "Mother-in-law: Don't go, son-in-law, it's late, you better stay the night with my daughter," garnering over 4.3 million views in two months (shown below, right).

The meme began to grow in popularity among English-speaking users in late June. On June 23rd, TikToker[8] @papaburgundy93 posted an English version of the meme that gained over 65,000 views in two months. On August 16th, TikToker[9] @danawang posted a version that gained over 2 million views in two weeks (shown below, left). On August 20th, TikToker[10] @searchingthewebforsofia posted a version that gained over 560,000 views in 10 days (shown below, right).
