"Like This Image to Die Instantly" is an image macro series which instructs viewers to click a social media like button in order to kill themselves.
Origin
On November 29th, 2016, the earliest known use of the caption was submitted in a post by Redditor dreggeman, who captioned a photograph of YouTuber Jon Jafari captioned with the message "like this image to die instantly" (shown below). Prior to being archived, the post gathered more than 3,800 points (93% upvoted) and 40 comments on /r/JonTron.[3]
Spread
On February 4th, 2017, Instagram user @_extendo_[1] uploaded a photograph of Ethan Klein from h3h3productions with the "like this image to die instantly" caption (shown below). Within seven months, the post gained over 14,400 likes.
On March 6th, YouTuber Pyrocynical uploaded a video titled "Click This Video to Die Instantly," which gathered more than 800,000 views and 10,000 comments over the next six months (shown below)..
On September 4th, Instagram user @seth.v.2[2] posted an image of Bart Simpson wearing a dress captioned with the "die instantly" message (shown below). Within one week, the post gathered upwards of 11,300 likes.
