Lightning McQueen Crocs

About

Lightning McQueen Crocs refers to a pair of shoes made by the Crocs company made in the likeness of the protagonist from Pixar's Cars, Lightning McQueen. Though they were introduced as shoes for children, their surprising popularity among adults made them a hot item. They have gone on sale twice, once in 2019 and once in 2021, and have quickly sold out both times.

Origin

On July 12th, 2017, Collin Bonner posted a petition on Change.org^[2] advocating for Crocs to make Lightning McQueen Crocs in adult sizes. The petition (shown below) received over 33,000 signatures.

Spread

Citing popular demand, Crocs first announced Lightning McQueen Crocs for adults on May 6th, 2019.^[1] The shoes sold out in less than 24 hours.

On April 21st, 2021, Crocs^[3] announced that the Lightning McQueen shoes for adults would be back in stock on April 27th, 2021 (shown below, left). On the 27th, the shoes sold out in less than an hour (shown below, right).^[4]

This led many on Twitter to vent their frustrations. User @carebear3d^[5] posted, "THIS YEAR HAS SUCKED ASS AND NOT GETTING THE LIGHTNING MCQUEEN CROCS WILL PUSH ME OFF THE MUTHAFUCKEN EDGE" (shown below, left) User @LittleKy10^[6] tweeted, "I just want to be able to buy my lightning McQueen crocs but of course the website crashed.I am gonna have a full blown toddler style caillou meltdown If I miss these shoes again" (shown below, right). Reactions were covered by the Daily Dot.^[7]
