Difficulty Level: Asian is an expression associated with WIN images and videos of Asian origin on the English-speaking web. While different cultures are known for their own expertise and talents, the myth of East Asian superiority has become particularly notable through media portrayal in American TV shows and films.

Origin

On November 2nd, 2011, the Tumblr blog "Difficulty Level: Asian"[1] was launched with a YouTube video of an Asian girl getting a perfect score in a basketball arcade game. The Google Trends graph[11] also supports this timeline with the largest spike recorded around the same time in early November 2011.

Spread

On November 26th, 2011, 9GAG user danielma90 submitted a facebombed image of an Asian guy in a post titled "Difficulty level: Asian"[2] (shown below).

On December 21st, 2011, Redditor Lessthanmore submitted an image of an Asian kid studying in the back of a motorcycle in a post titled "Study Level: Asian," which received more than 14,000 up votes and 420 comments prior to being archived.

On March 7th, 2012, Redditor reduxus submitted an image of an Asian FedEx employee taking a nap behind a stack of cardboard boxes in a post titled "Sleeping at work level: Asian,"[10] receiving 31,388 upvotes and nearly 1,000 comments prior to being archived.

Throughout 2012 and 2013, this expression appeared in a number of posts on Reddit[6], FunnyJunk[7] and The Meta Picture[8], as well as in the title of a YouTube[9] video playlist. On Reddit alone, there are more than 220 image posts bearing the title "level asian" as of October 2013.
