About
The Lesbian Breakup Curse is an alleged curse responsible for the breakup of several notable lesbian influencer and TikTok couples, or WLW (women-loving-women) couples, in August 2022, including Sedona and Rylee, Alissa and Sam, Avery and Soph and Jojo Siwa and Kylie Prew. The curse was allegedly started when LGBTQ+ musician Fletcher name-dropped an ex in her song "Becky's So Hot," inspiring videos discussing the curse throughout August 2022.
Origin
On August 1st, 2022, musician Fletcher, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, released a music video for her song "Becky's So Hot" (shown below).[1] In the song she sings about a breakup with her ex-girlfriend Becky. Many believe this was the instigator for the "lesbian breakup curse," although some speculate that it began when JoJo Siwa said she doesn't like the word "lesbian," stemming from a July 25th, 2022 interview with JoJo by Yahoo Life.[2]
On August 2nd, TikTok influencers Sedona and Rylee, a lesbian couple, announced their breakup in a now-deleted video (re-upload shown below, left).[3] On August 3rd, it was reported that TikTok influencers Alissa and Sam, a longtime couple, broke up, prompting them both to delete their social media accounts (shown below, right).[4] On the same date, it was reported that TikTokers Avery and Soph broke up.[5]
On that day, TikToker[6] @themiddleofnowheree posted a video set to "Becky's So Hot" with her partner where she wonders if her and other lesbians' relationships are cursed now because of the breakups of the three couples, garnering over 600,000 views in three weeks (shown below). This is the earliest known video suggesting the existence of a lesbian breakup curse.
Spread
In the following days, TikTokers began posting videos discussing a "lesbian breakup curse," often expressing worry about their relationships because of it. On August 9th, TikToker[7] @zolita posted a video about the curse, gaining over 200,000 views in two weeks (shown below, left). The next day, TikToker[8] @soso_swag posted a video about the curse, garnering over 100,000 views in the same span of time (shown below, right).
Prior to August 12th, JoJo Siwa and her on-again-off-again girlfriend Kylie Prew broke up. On August 16th, Prew went live on Instagram to talk about how she and Siwa broke up recently (shown below, re-upload).[9] The break up was reported on by numerous media outlets, including Page Six.[10]
The breakup of JoJo and Kylie was attributed to the lesbian breakup curse by some, including TikToker[11] @kendallxpayne, who posted a video explaining the curse to her girlfriend on August 12th, garnering over 30,000 views in two weeks (shown below). The curse was reported on by NBC News[12] on August 19th and Dexerto[13] on August 23rd.
