Leonardo DiCaprio Playing Volleyball is a reaction image macro series of two photographs of Academy Award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio kicking a volleyball and being hit in the face with a volleyball.
Origin
On June 25th, 2019, the New York Post[1] published a photograph of DiCaprio playing volleyball in the article "Ouch! Leonardo DiCaprio gets whacked in the face by a volleyball." That day, the paper's Page Six section tweeted [2] the photograph. The post received more than 4,600 likes and 1,000 retweets in two days (shown below).
Spread
Following the post, others began sharing and mocking the photograph. Twitter[3] user @vilvaraja tweeted, "Here’s a picture of Leonardo DiCaprio getting hit in the face by a volleyball that I just thought I really should put out there for whoever else needs it." The post received more than 2,400 likes and 500 retweets in two days (shown below, left).
Twitter[4] user @annaroseiovine tweeted an object-labeled variation of the photograph. The post received more than 1,300 likes and 200 retweets in two days (shown below, center).
Throughout the day, others mocked the photograph of DiCaprio, using it to describe moments of failure. Twitter[5] user @alessciarra tweeted, "I would have never thought that @LeoDiCaprio could be an accurate representation of me in high school attempting PE" (shown below, right).
Several media outlets covered the meme, including Time,[6] Fox News, [7] USA Today,[8] Yahoo,[9] Harper's Bazaar,[10] Glamour,[11] Elle,[12] Jezebel[13] and more.
That day, Twitter[14] published a Moments page on the photograph.
