Leonardo DiCaprio Only Dates Below 25 or DiCaprio Girlfriend 25 Years Old Age Limit refers to a series of memes and jokes making fun of actor Leonardo DiCaprio purportedly always breaking up with his girlfriends once they reach the age of 25 and never dating anyone older than that. First observed by Slate in 2016 and popularized by a 2019 Reddit infographic, the meme saw a massive burst in virality following DiCaprio's breakup with his 25-year-old girlfriend Camila Morrone in August 2022.

Origin

On January 5th, 2016, Slate^[1] writer Christina Cauteruci published an article that brought to light Leonardo DiCaprio's reported pattern of only dating women who are 20 to 25 years of age (screenshot shown below).

In the following years, more news websites wrote about Leonardo DiCaprio's dating pattern. For example, on August 18th, 2018, The Sun^[2] published an article illustrated by two graphs (shown below, left and right).

On March 10th, 2019, Redditor^[3] TrustLittleBrother posted an infographic on DiCaprio's dating pattern that received over 26,200 upvotes in the /r/dataisbeautiful subreddit in three years and was widely circulated^[4] online (shown below).

Spread

Following the viral spread of the infographic, memes and jokes referencing DiCaprio's dating habits were posted online on Twitter and other websites. For example, on April 5th, 2019, Twitter^[5] user @ninaoyama made a tweet that gained over 410 retweets and 3,600 likes in three years (shown below, left). On May 22nd, 2019, Twitter^[6] user @haniruok referred to the phenomenon as "leopause," with the post gaining over 270 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, right).

On June 16th, 2022, DiCaprio's girlfriend model Camila Morrone celebrated her 25th birthday. Starting on the same day, users on social media posted jokes predicting DiCaprio and Morrone splitting up sometime soon. For example, on June 15th, 2022, Twitter^[7] user @kirkpate posted a video that received over 1.1 million views, 3,300 retweets and 33,500 likes in two months (shown below).

On August 30th, 2022, two and a half months following Morrone's 25th birthday, People^[8] reported that DiCaprio and Morrone broke up after four years together. On the same day, Twitter^[8] account @FilmUpdates tweeted the news, with the tweet receiving over 860 retweets and 13,800 likes in less than 24 hours. In the following hours, multiple memes about DiCaprio's dating pattern were posted online. For example, that day, Twitter^[9] user @KaraBTweets made a tweet that received over 7,500 retweets and 75,700 likes in one day (shown below, left). Also that day, Twitter^[10] user @paulswhtn quote tweeted @FilmUpdate's tweet, writing, "she turned 25 in june…womp womp." The tweet received over 19,300 retweets and 320,000 likes in one day (shown below, right).
