Leisure Diving is a photo fad in which people are photographed jumping into a pool in a relaxed pose or partaking in a nonchalant activity such as reading or drinking.
Origin
In the summer of 2011, Harvard Business School grads[1] Brian Thorne and Ed Foy uploaded photos of themselves creatively diving in to a pool to a private Facebook album. After realizing the images were a hit amongst their friends, on June 5th, they registered the domain name LeisureDive.com.[2] Two weeks later, they created a Facebook group[7], launching both on June 29th, 2012 with a handful of their own photographs. As of June 2013, the Leisure Dive Facebook fan page has more than 16,000 likes.
Spread
LeisureDiving.com[8] saw its first user submission on July 3rd, 2011. On June 19th, the photo fad caught the attention of a number of news sites and internet culture blogs including Buzzfeed[9] The FW[3], International Business Times[4], The Daily Mail[5] and Yahoo! News.[6] Between July and September 2011, images of people Leisure Diving were featured on Cafe Mom[10], the Daily Beast[11], Smosh[12], the Washington Post[13], Neatorama[14], the Today Show[15] (shown below), the Chive[16], Oddee[17] and VentureBeat.[18] Additional examples have also been posted to Tumblr with the tag Leisure Diving.[19]
