Origin

On the July 22nd, 2019 Monday Night Raw, a "reunion" show for the company which brought in dozens of former stars to make cameos,[1] Seth Rollins was scheduled for a match against AJ Styles. Styles' faction brethren Gallows and Anderson flanked were present at ringside, leading to Rollins being outnumbered. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and other members of former wrestling faction D-Generation X then appeared at ringside to support Rollins, giving him the upper hand. They were joined by other retired wrestlers Kevin Nash and Scott Hall of "The Kliq," eventually forcing Styles, Gallows, and Anderson to leave the ring (shown below).

After the segment, the retired wrestlers celebrated in the ring with a group hug as Rollins looked on (shown below).

Spread

After the moment aired, people began commenting on the picture as though it were emblematic of common criticisms with the modern WWE, namely how the company seems more enamored with retired stars than current talent. Uproxx writer Brandon Stroud called it "the photo of a generation"[2] (shown below, left). It appeared in a post on Reddit's /r/SquaredCircle[3] by Dv1111167686 with the caption "Ladies and gentlemen, introducing WWE's new face of the company," sarcastically referring to how Rollins has been rumored to be anointed the face of the company by Vince McMahon. Twitter user @ScotUndertaker[4] wrote "iconic levels of dork from Seth Rollins here" (shown below, right).

Others turned the photo into an object labeling meme representing moments when one feels left out. For example, user @hunktears added labels in which Rollins was "me" and the retired wrestlers were "my friends on acid" (shown below, left). User @Maffewgregg posted an example in which all the people were labeled as various Burnout video games (shown below, right).
