On May 20th, 2011, DeviantArt user Algiark posted an image of Spongebob with the face of Enel from One Piece put over it(shown below)[1].



On May 24th, 2019, Redditor FaZe-Asian submitted a composite of SpongeBob laughing including the edit with Enel's face captioned with a mock conversation between women and men about sexual abuse (shown below). Over the next four days, the post received more than 22,100 points (92% upvoted) and 180 comments on /r/dankmemes.[5]

On May 25th, 2019, Redditor xXx_Ya_Yeet_xXx posted an image featuring pictures of SpongeBob Squarepants laughing to represent women reacting to the statement "Over 90% of work related deaths are men and men are 3x more likely to commit suicide" to /r/dankmemes,[4] where it gained upwards of 6,000 points (91% upvoted) and 110 comments over the next 72 hours (shown below, left). That same day, Redditor ClassicDecimus12 submitted a variation presented as a reaction to a man saying "Cardi B drugged and assaulted me" (shown below, right). Within 72 hours, the post gained over 52,400 points (89% upvoted) and 680 comments on /r/dankmemes.[3]



Also on May 25th, Redditor TacticalSaint47 submitted a Laughing SpongeBob meme about 14-year-old girls mocking classmates with clinical depression to /r/dankmemes[6] (shown below). Meanwhile, Memebase[2] published a collection of examples of the meme titled "'Laughing Spongebob' Memes Are An Edgy Take On Hypocrisy."
