About
Lancey or Lancey refers to a TikTok trend that uses the song "LANCEY OR LANCEY" by Lancey Faux to show people's glow ups via photo slideshows, essentially asking the video's viewer "Said she love me, which one? Lancey or Lancey?" The trend started in mid-2023, specifically gaining mainstream spread in August 2023.
Origin
On September 23rd, 2022, Lancey Faux's album LIFE IN HELL released with the song "LANCEY OR LANCEY" as the album's 15th track.[1] On the same day, Lancey Faux uploaded the song's music video to YouTube,[2] receiving roughly 1.1 million views and 51,000 likes in 10 months (shown below).
On July 24th, 2023, TikToker[2] @dokjami posted an Operation: True Love edit that used the song and its hook "Said she love me, which one? Lancey or Lancey?" gaining roughly 3.4 million plays and 195,900 likes in three weeks (shown below). The video created a TikTok sound[3] that gained viral usage, officially snowballing the Lancey or Lancey trend. The trend predominantly surfaced on August 10th, 2023, across multiple viral videos and slideshows, the most viral of which was a slideshow posted by TikToker[4] @notminibxnkrxll, gaining roughly 3.9 million plays and 431,500 likes in one week.
Spread
Going into August 2023, various, viral slideshows were posted using the primary TikTok sound.[3] In turn, meta video content about the trend started to surface, such as a video posted by TikToker[5] @kaybee.vi on August 11th, 2023, who joked about investing in "the 5/10s," gaining roughly 10 million plays and 1.7 million likes in six days (shown below, left). Alternatively, TikToker[6] @prettygirlslovenaomi posted a video on August 12th, humorously criticizing the trend, claiming that people were "showing a photo of you when u were 12 vs 18," gaining roughly 2.7 million plays and 400,200 likes in five days (shown below, right).
By August 17th, 2023, the trend's primary TikTok sound[3] had amassed over 758,500 videos and slideshows using it. Variant sounds[7][8] a part of the trend also gained thousands of posts.
