About

Lala Bop is a slang term used to negatively describe a promiscuous person who has had multiple sexual partners. In November 2022, a song titled "Lalabop" that repeats the phrase started to become popular on TikTok, sparking a trend where users call out specific TikTokers of being lala bops and problematic, sharing their faces, tagging them directly and specifically detailing what they've allegedly done to earn the titles. The trend became notably popular in August and September 2023 and sparked backlash and parodies where fictional and ironic characters are called out for being lala bops.

Origin

The exact origins of the term "lala bop" are unclear. On May 1st, 2021, YouTuber[1] and rapper Almighty Rexxo released a song titled "LALA Bop," although does not appear to be used in the proper context. On November 17th, 2022, TikToker[8] @n3_diorr uploaded a video captioned, "Pov: you the girl who made lala bop now it's going viral," set to a song that repeats the phrase "lala bop," garnering around 13,800 views in 10 months (shown below).

On December 1st, 2022, Urban Dictionary[2] user Boo#2 posted a definition for lala bop that gained over 170 thumbs-ups in a year, writing:

Spread

The original sound for "Lalabop" started to see use following its November 2022 upload in a trend where users expose others for alleged "lala bop" and problematic behavior. One early example was posted by TikToker[9] @thematthewsfamliy on December 2nd, 2022, where the user posted several photos accusing a girl of being a lala bop, garnering over 1.5 million views in nine months (shown below).

In August 2023, numerous TikTokers began participating in the trend, including TikToker @1alab0p although their account has been deleted and TikToker[11] @torontolalabopp. On August 28th, 2023 YouTuber[3] Velle Vell posted a music video for the song "Lalabop" by Ymb Nuski, garnering over 1,700 views in 10 days (shown below).

On September 2nd, 2023, TikToker[4] @1alab0preal posted a slideshow set to "Lalabop" consisting of two slides that read "lala bop" followed by a photo of a tagged, now-deleted TikToker, captioned, "This is Izzy. She got passed around by the friendgroup, she a th0t, and she lost her v-card at 13, she a home wrecker, she got πŸ–• multiple times," garnering over 795,000 views in six days.

Between the 2nd and the 4th, the same TikToker uploaded nine other slideshows in the same format, tagging TikTokers directly, showing their faces and exposing them for allegedly sleeping around and being problematic, each video gaining hundreds of thousands to millions of views. The most popular examples were three videos posted to TikTok[5][6][7] on September 4th, garnering over 1.2 million, 1.4 million and 1.5 million views respectively in four days (examples shown below, censored).

Around the same time, parody versions of the trend became popularized on the app under the same original sound, as well as criticism towards users like @1alab0preal. On September 3rd, TikToker[10] @waterhumidifier posted a version of the trend exposing Dora the Explorer, garnering over 1.9 million views in five days (shown below, left).
