Kyle MacLachlan's Lorde Selfies, also known as Kyle MacLachlan's Headphones Seflies or Kyle MacLachlan's "Listening To Myself" Post, refers to two selfies taken by American actor Kyle MacLachlan (known for his role as Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks) in January 2024, in which he's wearing a striped shirt and headphones, captioned, "Listening to myself." One selfie is shot from above, showing MacLachlan's legs and feet stretched out. The selfies were parodying New Zealander singer-songwriter Lorde who posted identical selfies to her Instagram in late 2023. On Twitter / X and elsewhere, meme creators added captions to the photos as well as spread their usage as reaction images.

Origin

On January 16th, 2024, actor Kyle MacLachlan posted two selfies on Instagram^[1] captioned, "Listening to myself." The selfies pictured him wearing headphones and a blue-white striped shirt. The second image was taken from the top down, showing his legs and feet stretched out. The photos received over 138,300 likes in three days (shown below).

Also on January 16th, 2024, MacLachlan also posted the selfies to X^[2] with the same caption, gaining roughly 36,000 likes across the same timeframe.

In his Instagram^[1] post, MacLachlan tagged singer-songwriter Lorde who, on December 17th, 2023, had posted identical selfies to Instagram,^[3] also captioned, "Listening to myself." Lorde's photos amassed over 556,700 likes in one month (shown below).

Spread

After MacLachlan's posts, meme creators repurposed his selfies, inserting them into exploitable templates or captioning them. For instance, an early example was posted by X^[4] user @xiu_shoegaze on January 16th, 2024, gaining over 20,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). The same meme was reposted to Instagram^[5] by @pobreweonaconinternet on January 17th where it gained over 1,900 likes in two days.

Also on January 16th, 2024, X^[6] user @altmsfrizzle wrote, "thank god for kyle maclachlan," earning over 1,200 likes in three days (shown below, right).

On January 16th, 2024, a viral post about MacLachlan's selfies was shared by the Facebook ^[7] page Stereogum, receiving over 10,000 reactions in three days.

On January 17th, 2024, the Tumblr ^[8] blog scarliefrancis shared the comparison photos between MacLachlan and Lorde, gaining over 24,100 notes in two days.

On TikTok, users made fancams, edits and memes with MacLachlan and Lorde, such as TikToker^[9] @romulusedits on January 18th, 2024, whose edit received over 118,900 plays and 31,200 likes in one day (shown below).
