About
Kraid's Music refers to a song that plays in Metroid while the player traverses Kraid's Lair. In early 2019, the song became used in numerous bait-and-switch remixes a la Megalovania.
Origin
Kraid's theme appeared in the original Metroid game for the NES, released in 1986 (shown below).
On January 9th, 2019, Twitter user @jab50yen posted a remix of the track set to a Mafia City meme (shown below).
Spread
Hours later, @ItsBigPurp posted a remix of a TikTok featuring the opening notes of the theme (shown below).
Over the following several days, the user uploaded dozens more similar videos, saying they hoped it would be the month information Metroid 4 is released.[2] Some examples include a Sicko Mode variation that gained over 70 retweets and 200 likes (shown below, top) and a Games Done Quick post that gained over 50 retweets and 170 likes (shown below, bottom).
The trend was picked up by other Twitter users in the following days. User @TripleKyun posted a video parodying a King of the Hill scene that gained over 900 retweets and 3,000 likes (shown below, top) and user @DitzyFlama posted a Spongebob Squarepants remix that gained over 300 retweets and 1,200 likes (shown below, bottom). An inquiry about the spread of the remixes was posted to /r/OutOfTheLoop on January 14th, 2019.[1]
