Kobe Bryant Explaining to His Daughter is a reaction video series using a video of former professional basketball player Kobe Bryant speaking to his daughter Gianna. The clip went viral in early 2020 as people joked about what Bryant might have said to her and situation wherein which one might make similar faces and gestures as Bryant.
Origin
On December 21st, 2019, at a Brooklyn Nets basketball game in Brooklyn, New York, cameras filmed Bryant speaking with his daughter in the crowd. That day, YouTuber CliveNBAParody shared an isolated clip of the moment on YouTube. Within one month, the clip received more than 757,000 views (shown below).
Later that week, on December 27th, 2019, Twitter user @MomoLcztt shared the clip with the caption "Bomboclaat", which, online, asks followers to caption the clip. Within two weeks, the video received more than 68 million views, 55,000 likes and 6,800 retweets (shown below).
Spread
Several days later, on December 31st, the clip went viral, following a tweet by @lowlifeBM7, which received more than 81,000 likes and 26,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below). They captioned the post, "Me explaining to my younger siblings how I would’ve got my ass beat for the bullshit they pull."
The clip continued to gain shares, spreading in usage, thanks to several posts that received more than 100,000 likes and 25,000 retweets (examples below). These examples hinged on recontextualizing Bryant's conversation with other subjects.
On January 3rd, BuzzFeed [1] reported on the meme's spread in the article "Kobe Bryant 'Explaining' Has Become A Hilarious New Meme."
