Kirby's Mouthful Mode refers to the video game character Kirby's ability to partially consume various objects to acquire their shape, size and functions. First revealed on the February 9th, 2022, Nintendo Direct and set to appear in the upcoming video game Kirby and the Forgotten Land, the new ability inspired various memes, with artists on social media creating humorous fan art of Kirby eating different objects.
Origin
On February 9th, 2022, a Nintendo Direct broadcast streamed online. In the livestream, a gameplay trailer for the upcoming video game Kirby and the Forgotten Land was shown.[1] In the trailer, a new Kirby ability, called "Mouthful Mode," was introduced. The ability allows Kirby to partially consume various objects such as cars and vending machines, stretching over them and inheriting their shape, size and functions (trailer shown below).
Spread
Immediately following the broadcast, artists on Twitter started posting humorous fan art inspired by the ability, which imagined Kirby using it on various items. For example, artist Kekeflipnote tweeted[2] an artwork on February 9th, 2022, of a Kirby using the Mouthful Mode on a car, known as "Carby," that gained over 10,900 retweets and 70,500 likes in one day (shown below, left). Artist @sludgetoons tweeted[3] a fan art of Kirby using the ability on the Fukouna Shoujo 03, with the post gaining over 7,700 retweets and 63,900 likes in one day (shown below, right).
Artists @benatic_bro and @TheEpicJames both tweeted[4][5] fan art referencing the Ed, Edd n Eddie episode in which Ed eats a mattress by stretching himself over it (shown below, left and right).
In the day following the broadcast, multiple humorous drawings exploring the ability were posted on social media, primarily on Twitter.
