Kingdom Hearts 3's Monsters, Inc. Goofy refers to Disney character Goofy as he appears in the Disney-Pixar film Monsters, Inc. -themed level from Square Enix's upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3. The grotesque nature of the character led to jokes online about Goofy's appearance.

Origin

In the main Kingdom Hearts games, the player plays as Sora, a young boy who travels to various Disney-themed worlds with his companions Donald Duck and Goofy. In each world they visit, they are given new costumes and designs to fit the atmosphere of the world they're in. On February 10th, 2018, the Kingdom Hearts YouTube channel uploaded a new trailer for the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts 3, which showed the cast interacting with the cast from Disney-Pixar's Monsters Inc. (shown below).

Spread

Shortly after the trailer was released, Twitter users were quick to comment on Goofy's appearance in the Monsters, Inc. world. Twitter user @SirKeyblade^[1] posted screenshots of the character, saying they "loved" the design, gaining over 80 retweets and 210 likes (shown below).

Many other Twitter users reacted differently to the Goofy design, offering jokes and commentary. User @TopherFlorence^[2] tweeted that the design was the most terrifying to have ever appeared in a Final Fantasy game, gaining over 3,200 retweets (shown below, left). He then tweeted a string of jokes about the design, saying "he looks like a cartoon flu virus in a french cold medicine commercial" and "he look like four background characters from reboot had a teleporter accident." User @aSwankyOtter^[3] tweeted a "this isn't weed" joke, gaining over 50 retweets and 110 likes (shown below, right). Jokes about Goofy's appearance were covered by Kotaku.^[4]
