Origin

On November 14th, 2010, the Disney film Tangled was released. The film includes a song titled "Kingdom Dance," which plays during a scene where Rapunzel dances with Flynn Rider after getting her hair braided, inspiring the whole town to dance together (shown below).

On August 28th, 2021, TikToker[1] @miss_jamiejames posted a video dancing to "Kingdom Dance" with the on-screen text "Okay but imagine dancing on this with your comfort character," gaining over 872,000 views in six days (shown below).

This inspired a number of TikTokers to dance over the sound with similar on-screen text. On August 30th, TikToker[2] @forever__cosplay performed a dance inspired by the one from the Tangled scene over similar text, gaining over 1.6 million views in four days (shown below).

Spread

Over the following days, TikTokers began uploading videos doing a dance similar to the one in Tangled, sometimes using on-screen text to romanticize the dance. On September 1st, TikToker[5] @jesskiddingm8 posted a video doing the dance, gaining over 4.4 million views in two days (shown below).

On September 2nd, TikTokers[3][4] @garrettheestallion and @abisicari performed the dance, gaining over 1.4 million and 3.5 million views respectively in a day (shown below, left and right).
