About
Kermit Arrives or Kermit's Arrival is an exploitable image macro based on a scene from the 2011 film The Muppets, where Kermit the Frog is introduced to the other main characters. Following its creation in 2020, Kermit has been used to stand in for someone or something coming to help when it is needed most.
Origin
The format is originally from Kermit's first scene in The Muppets movie (see below, starting at 1:10), which was released on November 23rd, 2011. In the scene, the main characters Gary, Walter and Mary (left to right in the meme's top image) are tired and singed from trying and failing to break into Kermit's house. Kermit then appears in shadow with an otherworldly light from behind and a heavenly choir singing. These are revealed to be from a choir bus that was driving on the street behind Kermit.
The first recorded example of the images being combined and used as a meme was on September 14th, 2020, when Reddit user the-notsogrim-reaper uploaded a meme about Khan Academy to /r/memes[1] (see below). The image received over 39,000 upvotes over six months.
Spread
The day after the first version of the meme was posted, multiple well-received examples appeared. On September 15th, an example of the meme (see below) made by Reddit user PaddyTheLegend16 received more than 44,000 upvotes over six months.[2]
The meme continued to spread over the following months. During the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election's process of counting the votes in Nevada and Alaska, an example of the meme (see below) made by Reddit user baws9000 received over 100,000 upvotes in one month.[3]
