Keep the Door Open Three Inches is a command used by the character Hopper in Stranger Things season three directed at his daughter Eleven as she frequently had dates in her room with Mike. The line was then used in the finale in a tear jerking note to his daughter.

Origin

On July 4th, 2019, Netflix released season three of Stranger Things. In the finale, after the death of her father Eleven reads Hopper's heart to heart speech notes (shown below). The video clip was uploaded to YouTube four days later.

Spread

On July 4th, after the release of season three Twitter users revealed that the line has become known as tear-jerking. Twitter user @loraskuk^[1] tweeted about how the line made them cry much like Tony Stark's line "I love you 3000 times" in Avengers: Endgame (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 3,900 likes and 1,000 retweets in six days. The next day, @upsidebangtan^[2] shared a photo of someone crying in bed looking at their phone and paired it with a quote from Hopper's speech (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 7,100 likes and 2,500 retweets in five days.

That same day, Twitter user @urlocaldumbass_ tweeted a video of a boy crying and paired it with a quote from the note (shown below). The tweet garnered over 5,100 likes and 1,400 retweets in five days.
