The Kangaroo in a Car CapCut Template or Drive With Kangaroo is a CapCut template popularized on TikTok in which dash-cam footage of a kangaroo jumping towards a car plays, then cuts to a video of a person driving the car with the kangaroo as a passenger while the song "Save Your Tears" by The Weeknd plays. The template allows the user to place themselves or another image in the seat next to the kangaroo and was first used in late November 2023, becoming increasingly popularized throughout early December.
Origin
On May 1st, 2016, YouTuber[1] Dellamotor posted dash-cam footage of a kangaroo jumping at someone's car, garnering over 2 million views in seven years (shown below).
On November 22nd, 2023, TikToker[2] @happyeveryday1905 posted an edit that begins with the dash-cam footage, followed by a cut to a woman driving in a car with a kangaroo, garnering over 800,000 views in two weeks (shown below, left).
On November 27th, TikToker[3] @hoangtungutrongtulanh posted a similar video following the same format, with "Save Your Tears" by The Weeknd playing, garnering over 404,000 views in a week. On November 29th, the TikToker[4] posted the same video as a CapCut[5] template, garnering over 14.8 million views in the same span of time.
Spread
The template became increasingly popularized on TikTok over the following days. On December 1st, 2023, TikToker[6] @trendingcapcuttemplates posted a template for the meme, garnering over 84.5 million views in a week. That day, TikTokers[7][8] @.milito_ and @420doggface208 posted videos using the template that gained over 9.5 million views and 6.8 million views, respectively, in a week (shown below).
On December 3rd, the official @subwaysurfers TikTok[9] page posted a version of the meme, garnering over 7.3 million views in five days (shown below, left). On December 4th, TikToker[10] @henryk1221 posted an alternate version of the meme where he and the kangaroo hit a cow, which appears in the back seat following the collision, garnering over 16.3 million views in four days (shown below, right).
