"You Really Think Someone Would Do That? Just Go On the Internet and Tell Lies?" is a rhetorical question used sarcastically to mock another internet user's gullibility.

Origin

The phrase originated in Season 9, Episode 2 “Buster the Myth Maker” from the children’s animated television show Arthur, originally aired on April 7th, 2005.[1] In the episode, the character Arthur informs his friend Buster that he may have been reading fabricated information on the Internet, to which Buster responds with the quote in shock and disbelief (shown below).

"You really think someone would do that? Just go on the Internet and tell lies?"

On July 21st, 2011, Tumblr[8] user meowie posted a screen capture of Buster from the Arthur scene with the caption "You really think someone would do that, just go on the Internet and tell lies?" The post received more than 29,000 notes in less than 10 years (shown below)

On August 13th, 2011, the image was uploaded to the /r/pics[7] subreddit, where it accumulated more than 1,900 up votes and 30 comments in the first year.

On January 19th, 2012, a computer reaction image featuring the Yaranaika face and Buster's quote from Arthur was submitted to the Internet humor site FunnyJunk,[2] which included two panels accompanied by the caption "You really think someone would do that? / Just go on the internet and tell lies?" (shown below).

On July 21st, YouTuber MrPooprscooper uploaded an edited version of the Arthur scene, which zooms in on Buster's face while playing the song "O Fortuna" composed by Carl Orff (shown below, left). Several days later on July 24th, YouTuber RedBanMedia uploaded a Source Filmmaker video featuring the Sniper character from the shooter video game Team Fortress 2 dubbed with Buster's lines from the Arthur scene (shown below, right)

On August 6th, Redditor SolKool submitted a cinemagraph to the /r/gifs[5] subreddit, featuring a man wearing facepaint who suddenly turns toward the camera with the caption "Just go on the Internet and tell lies?" (shown below).
