Just Dropped Down to Say is a phrasal template used in tandem with an ASCII Art helicopter featuring a character who expresses an opinion led by the phrase "just dropped down to say."

Origin

On March 21st, 2019, Twitter ^[1] user @imdavisss tweeted the helicopter with the phrase "just dropped down to say Please patch pushing @beluba," referring to the NBA 2K Sports video game series Gameplay Director Mike Wang. The post received more than 50 retweets and 300 likes in five days (shown below).

Precursor

Prior to the post by @imdavisss, the ASCII helicopter had been used for various expressions of opinion. For examples, on June 8th, 2014, Twitter^[2] user @rodeopromo posted the same ASCII Art image from Just Dropped Down to Say (shown below, left). Others used the image, around this time, to post the phrase "Dropping Off This L," meaning "loss." On July 2nd, 2014, Twitter^[3] user @floyd_34 tweeted, "Dropping Off this L to these fuck niggas" (shown below, right).

Spread

Over the next day, the phrase and accompanying ASCII Art continued to spread on Twitter. On March 22nd, Twitter^[4] @NoelSznn tweeted, "Just dropped down to say your crush doesn't like you." The tweet received more than 11,000 retweets and 47,000 likes in four days (shown below, left).

Brands began using the format, as well, posting advertisements and opinions. The company NZXT,^[5] which makes computers for video games, tweeted, "just dropped down to say no you can't have a free PC." The post received more than 2,100 retweets and 27,000 likes in four days (shown below, center). Twitter Music^[6] tweeted about the Lady Gaga album ARTPOP, writing "just dropped down to say ARTPOP deserved better." The post received more than 6,500 retweets and 18,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).
