About

JRPG Taco Bell refers to a series of exploitable edits made from a photograph of a South Dakota Taco Bell in a remote grassy area. After a Twitter user pointed out that the Taco Bell resembles what a hub town might look like in an open-world RPG, others made Photoshop edits placing the Taco Bell in games like Xenoblade Chronicles and Final Fantasy.

Origin

On January 8th, 2023, Twitter user @BombermanHero[1] posted an image of a Taco Bell in South Dakota, captioning it, "Anybody wants something from the jrpg world map tacobell?" The tweet gained over 8,500 retweets and 67,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

The tweet quickly inspired exploitable edits in which people photoshopped the Taco Bell location into the overworlds of popular JRPGs. For example, on January 10th, 2023, Twitter user @Power_Mad[2] posted an edit putting the Taco Bell in Xenoblade Chronicles, gaining over 9,700 retweets and 81,000 likes in two days (shown below, left). On January 11th, user @ActualAero[3] posted an edit showing the cast of Final Fantasy VII visiting the Taco Bell, gaining over 30 retweets and 230 likes in one day (shown below, right). The meme was covered by Polygon.[4]
